How does sedentary work affect your employees?

Ergonomics is the science of designing a workplace, taking into account the capabilities and limitations of the employee. A poorly organized workplace, in the long run, leads to general fatigue, resentment and frustration with the job. This ultimately leads to lower productivity and product quality. Our methods for improving the ergonomics of the office workplace help to reduce the risk of occupational illnesses, thereby increasing productivity.

How does prolonged sitting affect our body?

Scientists agree that staying in a sitting position for more than 6 hours has negative consequences for our health. A statistical Pole spends at work 44 hours a week, which is more than 8 hours a day. In addition, office duties are transferred to the home, where he also spends time in a sitting position.

In the hustle and bustle of work, we quickly forget about ergonomics and taking breaks, and our body adapts to the wrong posture. Our posture becomes slouched, our chest closes, which makes it difficult to breathe freely, and our neck muscles tighten, which can lead to chronic headaches. A number of the above symptoms that we can observe in office workers are called upper crossed syndrome (link to my article here). This is why it is so important that the environment in which an employee works is properly set up and adapted to their needs. Individual workstation setup is a standard part of every ergonomic audit.

What can I do about neck pain?

Studies show that about 50% of the working population complain of musculoskeletal disorders. The sitting position forces uneven pressure on the spine. This overloads the joints and ligaments in this area. Visits to offices by masseurs/physiotherapists who perform so-called office massages are very effective in eliminating the effects of sedentary work.

How can you increase the amount of activity per day?

Our bodies are in constant need of movement and these days we unconsciously limit it by, among other things, looking for a parking space as close to the office as possible, ordering groceries online, and even, as has become more common in offices lately, using power boards to move around the workplace.

The key to staying healthy is movement. Proof of this is the ability of our body to adopt an upright posture, against the force of gravity. We are made of about 60 to 70% water, and this means that we need constant circulation of fluids, which is provided by physical activity. Neurons also need movement to send information. Generally speaking, every vital reaction in our body is driven by movement. So remember, movement is health!

What are some practical ways to increase physical activity at work?

  • Walking to and from the office for longer periods of time / cycling

  • Using the restroom on another floor

  • Taking the stairs instead of taking the elevator

  • Walking down the hallway during phone calls

The methods we present in our ergonomic audits are easy to put into practice - thanks to them you will stimulate the creativity of your employees and not distract them from their tasks.

Summary

  1. Try to keep your spine in a neutral position while working, change your position frequently;

  2. Listen to your body's signals, for example: if you feel pain in your lumbar region, take a five-minute break.

  3. Perform exercises that mobilize and increase the range of motion in the joints.

  4. Try to be physically active and do a minimum of a 30 minute walk twice a week.

  5. Adjust your workstation to make it as optimal as possible. If you don't know how, book our physiotherapists into your office.

If you are serious about the health of yourself and your employees, check out our offer. We will carry out trainings on ergonomics in your office and adjust work stations.
